Bulimia Nervosa Outreach Project – Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders Team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

The team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust works with young people (up to 18 years old) across South East London with a range of eating disorders and difficulties. One eating disorder we are particularly eager to raise awareness of is Bulimia Nervosa, which is an eating disorder characterised by a cycle of bingeing and then compensation (which can be through self-induced vomiting, laxative use, fasting or over-exercising).

Bulimia affects a large number of people in the UK and most frequently starts in the teenage years. From focus groups with young people, we have discovered that young people often do not know what bulimia is and many do not know where to turn for support if they do experience it. They also let us know that they felt there was still stigma around these difficulties in a lot of cases. Young people suggested that it was important for us to be providing information to extra-curricular groups (such as sports and youth groups) to ensure messages about seeking support could be shared when appropriate.

If you have any concerns around a young person’s eating, please feel free to call South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust enquiry and referral line for advice on:
